We are a coalition dedicated to reshaping traffic enforcement to prioritize safety
Our Mission
1. We aim to improve traffic safety, police practices, and community well-being by redirecting enforcement efforts toward dangerous driving violations with the greatest impact on public and roadway safety.
2. We educate interested and impacted parties about policy issues, and provide a forum for members to share resources and coordinate advocacy.
Why is some traffic enforcement unsafe?
-
Many traffic stops in the U.S. today do not improve safety. Of the 20 million annual stops, many are for minor issues like a missing inspection sticker or a tassel on a rearview mirror. Research indicates these stops offer little to no public safety benefits.
-
Federal programs have long encouraged using traffic stops to fight crime by making many stops for minor violations in hopes of finding unrelated criminal evidence. However, this approach diverts law enforcement from targeting dangerous behaviors like impaired driving and speeding. Data shows it's neither effective for crime prevention nor road safety.
-
This issue goes beyond ineffective traffic enforcement. Unnecessary stops by police, who are trained in force, create needless dangerous situations. Research shows these interactions can cause psychological, physical, and financial harm, disproportionately affecting communities of color. They also erode community trust, divert resources from crucial public safety needs, and rarely help solve serious crimes.
Our Solutions
Target dangerous driving behaviors like speeding, impaired driving, and distracted driving, which have the most significant impact on public safety.
Road Safety
Conduct searches only with reasonable suspicion of a specific crime, in order to improve discovery of evidence and limit chances of escalating encounters.
Law Enforcement Efficiency
Data & Transparency
Gather and analyze traffic stop data to identify which offenses don't require a stop and revise laws and policies accordingly to include alternatives to traffic stops.

“The economic and social costs of low-level traffic enforcement far outweighs the benefit. We can do better.”
